IRON (III) CHLORIDE
Definition and Uses: Ferric chloride, also called iron (III) chloride, is an industrial scale metal. The formula of the chemical compound is FeCl 3. The color of iron (III) chloride crystals depends on the angle of view, with reflected light the crystals appear dark green, but with the transmitted light they appear purple-red. The anhydrous iron (III) chloride is soluble in humid air, forming hydrogenated hydrogen chloride fumes. Rarely observed in its natural form, mineral molysite, known as some fumaroles mainly.

When dissolved in water, iron (III) chloride is subjected to hydrolysis and gives an exothermic reaction heat. The resulting brown acidic and corrosive solution is used as a coagulating agent in waste water treatment and drinking water production, and printed circuit boards are etchant like copper-based metals. Anhydrous iron (III) chloride is a very strong Lewis acid and is used as a catalyst in organic synthesis.
